I hope you are all well. After two days of lazily alternating between reading Henry James, watching old episodes of 30 Rock and cuddling my cats, I have overcome my cold and banished my migraine. Many of you have reached out about what the expectations are for outstanding assignments. My plan is this:
The most important thing is to try to end this epidemic as quickly as possible and save as many lives as possible. We do that by staying inside and if we go outside, we stay away from groups of people. So there are a lot of opportunities for hiking (if the rain stops-- not that I want it to), reading, binge-watching great television (anyone ever watch Fargo the TV show? my all- time favorite), and engaging in some very thorough Spring-cleaning, including steam-cleaning carpets and re-organizing our closets! (ok, that's probably just me). SJUSD has disconnected our email, so if you have questions or want to chat, post here. Please be healthy and stay safe and FLATTEN THAT CURVE! Here's Thelonious Monk from earlier today working hard to heed the Public Health Department's recommendations. If you are bored email me pictures of your pet(s) and I'll post them here for us all to aww [email protected] (this is only for pet pictures and I will not answer school-related questions on personal email.

Thank you! Mary Oliver, Danez Smith, Wallace Stevens (especially "Idea of Order at Key West"--I LOVE how it sounds), Emily Dickinson, Frank O'Hara, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Charles Baudelaire, Sylvia Plath, John Keats, Michael Palmer, Elizabeth Bishop, Fernando Pessoa (not poetry but his The Book of Disquiet is a miracle) are a few of my favorites. I just bought Terrance Hayes's American Sonnets. Finally if you haven't read Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities, you are missing out (not quite poetry, but not quite prose).

Students will choose which of their essays that they want me to grade, individually. Which means that one student could choose the Wilde Disobedience prompt while another student might want me to grade their Overrated essay.

Glad to hear you are doing better! Henry James always helps ( I am reading the Aspern Papers right now). The email idea is so cute so be prepared for an optical onslaught of pictures of my dog! Quick Question: how does: The succession of Almaden Valley Schools from SJUSD would better the community sound as a proposal? This whole virus has got me rethinking the structure of our system!

The Aspern Papers is so awesome-- dark, funny, and compelling! I would love pictures of your dog. As for whether Almaden Valley schools should leave SJUSD, you can write on this topic but do consider how this sheltered, privileged community becomes even more sheltered by this change?

I love the tone of it so far! Much better than portrait of a lady.

Thanks so much! Glad to hear you're feeling better, and please notify Thelonious Monk that he is, in fact, the handsomest boy in the world. -kjr

Good afternoon Ms. Jankowski. Glad that you are feeling better during this stressful time. For the argument research paper, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to write about whether or not it would be good for the United States to implement a universal basic income system for all Americans. What is your opinion?
